He went on to the University of Wisconsin, graduating with a Ph.D. in anthropology in 1931 with a dissertation on the Mormon church. He subsequently spent three years in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico as part of a Robert Redfield-led team studying the Maya that resulted in\n \n The Folk Culture of the Yucatan\n \n published by the University of Chicago Press in 1941. Hansen took a position as an assistant professor of sociology and anthropology at the University of Miami in Oxford, Ohio, in 1935.
