The film won an Academy Award for Documentary Short Subject in 1991 and The George Foster Peabody Award. \n</p><p>The film was inspired by Ishigo's book of artwork and memoir entitled <i>Lone Heart Mountain</i>, which documented life in the American concentration camps through her personal collection of photos, paintings, drawings and personal papers. Over the three years that Estelle and Arthur Ishigo spent living in two concentration camps (the first in <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Pomona_(detention_facility)\" title=\"Pomona (detention facility)\">Pomona</a>, California, and the second at Heart Mountain) she drew and painted the barbed-wire fences, guard towers, mothers caring for their babies, children at play, mess halls and the squalid conditions of the barracks in her notebook and on scraps of paper. \n</p><p>When the war ended, Heart Mountain was closed, and the Ishigos moved back to the West Coast, living for a time in a <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Hostels\" title=\"Hostels\">trailer park</a> set up for returning Japanese Americans. Estelle lived in poverty in the postwar years and after Arthur's death. Her artwork was first recognized in a 1972 exhibition of artwork produced in the American concentration camps of World War II titled <i><a class=\"mw-redirect encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Months_of_Waiting,_1942%E2%80%931945_(exhibition)\" title=\"Months of Waiting, 1942–1945 (exhibition)\">Months of Waiting, 1942–1945</a></i> organized by the California Historical Society in San Francisco, California.\n</p><p>Filmmaker Steven Okazaki first met Ishigo at a convalescent hospital, destitute, ill and under heavy medication. She told him, \"I've been waiting for someone to tell my story to,\" she said. \"Then I can die.\"<a class=\"\" href=\"#cite_note-ftnt_ref1-1\">[1]</a> With the help of other camp inmates, Okazaki gathered the pieces of Ishigo's story and her remarkable body of artwork. Tragically, Ishigo died in March 1990 before he was able to arrange for her to see the completed film. <a class=\"\" href=\"#cite_note-ftnt_ref2-2\">[2]</a>\n</p>\n<div id=\"authorByline\"><b>Authored by <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Patricia_Wakida\" title=\"Patricia Wakida\">Patricia Wakida</a></b></div>\n<div id=\"citationAuthor\" style=\"display:none;\">Wakida, Patricia</div>\n<p>Might also like <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/Harsh_Canvas:_The_Art_and_Life_of_Henry_Sugimoto_(film)\" title=\"Harsh Canvas: The Art and Life of Henry Sugimoto (film)\">Harsh Canvas: The Art and Life of Henry Sugimoto</a></i> (2001); <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/Out_of_Infamy:_Michi_Nishiura_Weglyn_(film)\" title=\"Out of Infamy: Michi Nishiura Weglyn (film)\">Out of Infamy: Michi Nishiura Weglyn</a></i> (2010); <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/Toyo_Miyatake:_Infinite_Shades_of_Gray_(film)\" title=\"Toyo Miyatake: Infinite Shades of Gray (film)\">Toyo Miyatake: Infinite Shades of Gray</a></i> (2001)\n</p>\n<div id=\"RelatedArticlesDisplay\">\n<div class=\"section\" id=\"Related_Articles\"><h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Related_Articles\">Related Articles</span></h2><div class=\"section_content\">\n<p>\n</p>\n<div id=\"RelatedArticlesSectionDisplay\">\n<div class=\"section\" id=\"\"><h3><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"\"></span></h3><div class=\"section_content\">\n<p>\n</p>\n<ul><li> <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Documentary_films/videos_on_incarceration\" title=\"Documentary films/videos on incarceration\">Documentary films/videos on incarceration</a></li></ul>\n</div></div></div>\n</div></div></div>\n<br/>\n<div class=\"section\" id=\"For_More_Information\"><h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"For_More_Information\">For More Information</span></h2><div class=\"section_content\">\n<p>Official website: <a class=\"external free offsite\" href=\"http://www.farfilm.com/#/days-of-waiting/\" rel=\"nofollow\">http://www.farfilm.com/#/days-of-waiting/</a>.\n</p><p>Kanopy Streaming link: <a class=\"external free offsite\" href=\"https://www.kanopystreaming.com/product/days-waiting-life-and-art-estelle-ishigo\" rel=\"nofollow\">https://www.kanopystreaming.com/product/days-waiting-life-and-art-estelle-ishigo</a>\n</p><p>Creef, Elena Tajima. \"The Gendering of Historical Trauma in Internment-Camp Documentary: The Case of Steven Okazaki's Days of Waiting.\" In <i>Countervisions: Asian American Film Criticism</i>.
