Filmmaker Claire Mix is the daughter of Ruth.\n</p><p>The film is largely based on a 2007 interview of Ruth, recording shortly before her death. Her recollections are filled out with interviews with former inmates—including former students of Frida Mix—and on camera reflections by Claire. In addition to family and archival photographs, many of the stories Ruth tells are illustrated through reenactments, with actors playing Frida, the young Ruth, and various inmates.\n</p><p>The story begins with a brief profile of the Mixes prior to the war. A teacher and something of a crusader, Frida is determined to help Japanese Americans and takes a job as a teacher at Gila, bringing Ruth along with her. Ruth volunteers as a nurse's aide and also assists Frida at times in the classroom. She tells stories of the <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Medical_care_in_camp\" title=\"Medical care in camp\">inadequate medical facilities</a> that led to unnecessary deaths and illnesses, of friendships made with inmates, and the general poor quality of life in a concentration camp. Japanese American interviewees fill in other aspects of the story, including the forced removal and roundup of Japanese Americans and the difficulties they faced when they <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Return_to_West_Coast\" title=\"Return to West Coast\">returned to their homes</a> after the war.\n</p><p>The film was funded by a grant from the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program, Transvideo Studios, the Gila River Reunion Committee and many individual donors.\n</p><p>Mix's story is also told in a young adult novel by Claire Mix, <i>The Girl with Hair Like the Sun</i> (2012), and in a play by Charles B. French titled <i>Hair Like the Sun</i> (2016).\n</p>\n<div id=\"authorByline\"><b>Authored by <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Brian_Niiya\" title=\"Brian Niiya\">Brian Niiya</a>, Densho</b></div>\n<div id=\"citationAuthor\" style=\"display:none;\">Niiya, Brian</div>\n<p>Might also like <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/The_Music_Man_of_Manzanar_(film)\" title=\"The Music Man of Manzanar (film)\">The Music Man of Manzanar</a></i> (2005); <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/Days_of_Waiting_(film)\" title=\"Days of Waiting (film)\">Days of Waiting: The Life and Art of Estelle Ishigo</a></i> (1990); <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/My_Friends_Behind_Barbed_Wire_(film)\" title=\"My Friends Behind Barbed Wire (film)\">My Friends Behind Barbed Wire</a></i> (2008)\n</p>\n<div id=\"RelatedArticlesDisplay\">\n<div class=\"section\" id=\"Related_Articles\"><h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Related_Articles\">Related Articles</span></h2><div class=\"section_content\">\n<p>\n</p>\n<div id=\"RelatedArticlesSectionDisplay\">\n<div class=\"section\" id=\"\"><h3><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"\"></span></h3><div class=\"section_content\">\n<p>\n</p>\n<ul><li> <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Documentary_films/videos_on_incarceration\" title=\"Documentary films/videos on incarceration\">Documentary films/videos on incarceration</a></li></ul>\n</div></div></div>\n</div></div></div>\n<div class=\"section\" id=\"For_More_Information\"><h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"For_More_Information\">For More Information</span></h2><div class=\"section_content\">\n<p><i>Gila River and Mama: The Ruth Mix Story</i> official website: <a class=\"external free offsite\" href=\"http://gilariverandmama.com/\" rel=\"nofollow\">http://gilariverandmama.com/</a>.\n</p><p>Yoshida, Edward. <i><a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://www.discovernikkei.org/en/journal/2011/7/26/4096/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Documentarian Claire Mix: The Story of an Angel in a Desert Dungeon</a>.</i> Discover Nikkei, July 26, 2011.\n</p>\n<!-- \nNewPP limit report\nCPU time usage: 0.136 seconds\nReal time usage: 0.142 seconds\nPreprocessor visited node count: 409/1000000\nPreprocessor generated node count: 2705/1000000\nPost‐expand include size: 10782/2097152 bytes\nTemplate argument size: 2688/2097152 bytes\nHighest expansion depth: 4/40\nExpensive parser function count: 0/100\nExtLoops count: 0/100\n-->\n<!-- Saved in parser cache with key mediawiki:pcache:idhash:1762-0!*!0!!*!5!* and timestamp 20180309150619 and revision id 28513\n -->\n</div></div><div class=\"toplink\"><a href=\"#top\"><i class=\"icon-chevron-up\"></i> Top</a></div></body></html>",
