Donnie Okada is continually made to play the part of the \"enemy\" in war games with friends, even as he tries to explain that his father and uncles served on the American side. A school visit by Donnie's father and uncle in their uniforms and medals changes the way he and his friends view their histories. \n</p><p>A native of Seattle, Sansei author Mochizuki wrote the book in part as a tribute to the <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/442nd_Regimental_Combat_Team\" title=\"442nd Regimental Combat Team\">442nd Regimental Combat Team</a> and other Asian American veterans. His prior picture book, <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/Baseball_Saved_Us_(book)\" title=\"Baseball Saved Us (book)\">Baseball Saved Us</a></i>, was set in a Japanese American concentration camp.\n</p>\n<div id=\"authorByline\"><b>Authored by <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Brian_Niiya\" title=\"Brian Niiya\">Brian Niiya</a>, Densho</b></div>\n<div id=\"citationAuthor\" style=\"display:none;\">Niiya, Brian</div>\n<p>Might also like: <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/So_Far_from_the_Sea_(book)\" title=\"So Far from the Sea (book)\">So Far from the Sea</a></i> by Eve Bunting; <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/Flowers_from_Mariko_(book)\" title=\"Flowers from Mariko (book)\">Flowers from Mariko</a></i> by Rick Noguchi and Deneen Jenks; <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/Mendez_v._Westminster:_For_All_the_Children_(book)\" title=\"Mendez v.
