He began his formal art training in Japan before immigrating to the United States in 1919 to join his father and brother, who were working in Wyoming. When they returned to Japan in 1922, Hashimoto elected to stay in the U.S. and moved to Washington, where he got married and found work in a lumber mill in Tacoma. During World War II, he was incarcerated in camps in <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Pinedale_(detention_facility)\" title=\"Pinedale (detention facility)\">Pinedale</a>, California; <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Tule_Lake\" title=\"Tule Lake\">Tule Lake</a>, California; and <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Minidoka\" title=\"Minidoka\">Minidoka</a>, Idaho, where he resumed his painting (mostly in watercolors) and created his only body of work. After the war, he returned to Tacoma where he worked as a gardener. He died in February 1980, in Tacoma, Washington, at age 82.\n</p>\n<div id=\"authorByline\"><b>Authored by <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Patricia_Wakida\" title=\"Patricia Wakida\">Patricia Wakida</a></b></div>\n<div id=\"citationAuthor\" style=\"display:none;\">Wakida, Patricia</div>\n<div class=\"section\" id=\"For_More_Information\"><h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"For_More_Information\">For More Information</span></h2><div class=\"section_content\">\n<p><i>The View from Within: Japanese American Art from the Internment Camps, 1942-1945</i>.
