Over the seasons, she returns to Mirikitani and learns about his life in scattered chapters: his childhood in Hiroshima, time spent living at <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Minidoka\" title=\"Minidoka\">Minidoka</a> and <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Tule_Lake\" title=\"Tule Lake\">Tule Lake</a>, two of ten American concentration camps during World War II, and his love of cats and painting. Following the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, Hattendorf finds Mirikitani in his usual spot, coughing amidst the fumes, dust, and despair that hangs over the city. She offers for him to move into her apartment with her, thus beginning the second act of a complex relationship of trust, compassion, and ego=. With Hattendorf's unwavering support, Mirikitani is able to locate his only surviving immediate relative and discovers that he is also related to San Francisco poet <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Janice_Mirikitani\" title=\"Janice Mirikitani\">Janice Mirikitani</a>. Hattendorf arranges for reunions with both women. When she attempts to track down Mirikitani's social security card and housing benefits, she learns why she is unable to procure one: Mirikitani <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Renunciation_of_citizenship\" title=\"Renunciation of citizenship\">lost his American citizenship</a> in a chain of events that began when he refused to comply with a <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Loyalty_questionnaire\" title=\"Loyalty questionnaire\">loyalty questionnaire</a> that was distributed to camp inmates. Only after <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Wayne_M._Collins\" title=\"Wayne M. Collins\">Wayne M. Collins</a> fought to reinstate citizenship for the Japanese Americans who had given it up under coercion, was Mirikitani able to remain in the country.\n</p><p>The documentary film has received numerous accolades, including the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival 2006, Best Documentary at the Durban Internation Film Festival, Frida Award for Best New Director at the Sun Valley Spiritual Film Festival, Audience Award at the Paris Cinema Film Festival, and Best Picture( Japanese Eyes category) at the Tokyo International Film Festival, among others. In 2007, <i>The Cats of Mirikitani</i> was aired nationally on PBS as part of the <i>Independent Lens</i> documentary film series.\n</p>\n<div id=\"authorByline\"><b>Authored by <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/wiki/Patricia_Wakida\" title=\"Patricia Wakida\">Patricia Wakida</a></b></div>\n<div id=\"citationAuthor\" style=\"display:none;\">Wakida, Patricia</div>\n<p>Might also like <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/Days_of_Waiting_(film)\" title=\"Days of Waiting (film)\">Days of Waiting: The Life and Art of Estelle Ishigo</a></i> (1990); <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/Harsh_Canvas:_The_Art_and_Life_of_Henry_Sugimoto_(film)\" title=\"Harsh Canvas: The Art and Life of Henry Sugimoto (film)\">Harsh Canvas: The Art and Life of Henry Sugimoto</a></i>; <i><a class=\"encyc rg\" href=\"/wiki/Ruth_Asawa:_Of_Forms_and_Growth_(film)\" title=\"Ruth Asawa: Of Forms and Growth (film)\">Ruth Asawa: Of Forms and Growth</a></i> (1978)\n</p>\n<div class=\"section\" id=\"For_More_Information\"><h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"For_More_Information\">For More Information</span></h2><div class=\"section_content\">\n<p>Official website: <a class=\"external free offsite\" href=\"http://www.thecatsofmirikitani.com/\" rel=\"nofollow\">http://www.thecatsofmirikitani.com/</a>.\n</p><p><i><a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/catsofmirikitani/film.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Cats of Mirikitani</a></i> on <i>Independent Lens</i> website.\n</p><p>Magee, Seana K. \"PBS Hawaii to Air 'The Cats of Mirikitani.'\" <i>Hawaii Herald</i>, May 4, 2007, 9.\n</p>\n</div></div><div class=\"section\" id=\"Reviews\"><h2><span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Reviews\">Reviews</span></h2><div class=\"section_content\">\n<p><a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://www.orionmagazine.org/index.php/articles/review/519/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bass, Rick</a>. <i>Orion</i>, January/February 2008.\n</p><p>Catsoulis, Jeannette. \"<a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/01/movies/02cats.html?\" rel=\"nofollow\">Painting Through the Pain.</a>\" <i>New York Times</i>, March 1, 2007. .\n</p><p><a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://www.popmatters.com/review/the-cats-of-mirikitani/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Meaney, Jake</a>. <i>PopMatters</i>, May 5, 2008.\n</p><p><a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://www.discovernikkei.org/en/journal/article/2694/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mori, Daryl</a>. <i>Discover Nikkei</i>, July 16, 2008.\n</p><p>Omori, Chizu. \"Filmmaker Studies Her Subject Closely.\" <i>International Examiner</i>, April 18–May 1, 2007, 12.\n</p><p>Page, Janice. \"<a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://www.boston.com/ae/movies/articles/2007/08/23/with_filmmakers_helping_hand_a_destitute_artist_finds_salvation/\" rel=\"nofollow\">With Filmmaker's Helping Hand, a Destitute Artist Finds Salvation.</a>\" <i>Boston Globe</i>, August 23, 2007.\n</p><p><a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://variety.com/2006/film/reviews/the-cats-of-mirikitani-1200516718/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Scheib, Ronnie</a>. <i>Variety</i>, April 26, 2006.\n</p><p>Shannon, Jeff. \"<a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?slug=cats20&amp;date=20070420\" rel=\"nofollow\">Homeless Artist Finds a Happy Ending in 'The Cats of Mirikitani.'</a>\" <i>Seattle Times</i>, April 20, 2007.\n</p><p><a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2007/09/07/films/the-cats-of-mirikitani/#.UxwGTdwcw08\" rel=\"nofollow\">Shoji, Kaori</a>. <i>The Japan Times</i>, September 7, 2007.\n</p>\n<!-- \nNewPP limit report\nCPU time usage: 0.128 seconds\nReal time usage: 0.133 seconds\nPreprocessor visited node count: 374/1000000\nPreprocessor generated node count: 2575/1000000\nPost‐expand include size: 7856/2097152 bytes\nTemplate argument size: 1418/2097152 bytes\nHighest expansion depth: 3/40\nExpensive parser function count: 0/100\nExtLoops count: 0/100\n-->\n<!-- Saved in parser cache with key mediawiki:pcache:idhash:2285-0!*!0!!*!5!* and timestamp 20180309150333 and revision id 28622\n -->\n</div></div><div class=\"toplink\"><a href=\"#top\"><i class=\"icon-chevron-up\"></i> Top</a></div></body></html>",
