Tsuneji Chino (1881–1964) was one of the leaders of the Issei legal challenges to the California\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Alien_land_laws/\" title=\"Alien land laws\">\n   Alien Land Law\n  </a>\n  in the early 1920s and a successful celery grower in Orange and San Diego Counties. Born in Nagano Prefecture in Japan and having attended college for a time, he came to the U.S. in 1905, eventually settling in Orange County, California. Given his education and English language ability, he became a labor contractor, then a farmer, and a leader of the local\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Japanese_associations/\" title=\"Japanese associations\">\n   Japanese Association\n  </a>\n  . In the latter capacity, he led efforts to challenge the alien land law that ended up going all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ultimately turned back the challenge and upheld the legality of the laws. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Chino was among the Issei community leaders arrested. He was first sent to the\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Tuna_Canyon_(detention_facility)/\" title=\"Tuna Canyon (detention facility)\">\n   Tuna Canyon Detention Station\n  </a>\n  , then to internment camps at\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Fort_Missoula_(detention_facility)/\" title=\"Fort Missoula (detention facility)\">\n   Fort Missoula\n  </a>\n  , Montana and\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Santa_Fe_(detention_facility)/\" title=\"Santa Fe (detention facility)\">\n   Santa Fe\n  </a>\n  , New Mexico. He returned to Southern California after the war and worked as a gardener in Santa Ana, California.
