A Northwest native, she began her career at the\n \n Seattle Post-Intelligencer\n \n and moved to the\n \n Los Angeles Times\n \n in 1995, where her beat was international economics with a focus on Asia. As a correspondent for one of the country’s leading newspapers, she covered the 1999 Hong Kong handover, the Asian financial crisis, the fall of Indonesian strongman Suharto and the rise of China. Her reporting garnered numerous awards, including the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting and the George Polk Award for Economics Reporting for a series she co-authored on Wal-Mart. After leaving the\n \n Times\n \n , she worked for Saylor Company, a strategic public relations firm with a global clientele. A longtime interest in Japan, her ancestral homeland, was the inspiration for her book\n \n An Ocean Between Us: The Changing Relationship of Japan and the United States Told in Four Stories from the Life of an American Town\n \n . She is currently working on a book on the exchange of civilian hostages between the U.S. and Japan during World War II.
