"caption": "Mace's photo of the Sato children is one of his iconic shots. In part, this is because this photo graces the cover of Edward Spicer, et als. book, Impounded People (University of Arizona Press). It has been reprinted frequently, perhaps because the girl's face seems to reflect the trauma, alienation, and sense of rejection that probably many of her compatriots experienced with removal, assembly, and concentration. Her brother appears to gaze with worried concern regarding his sister's obvious unhappiness.",
"caption_extended": "A scene in the induction center at Tule Lake. Many children were left guarding the family's sole possessions while their parents went through the rather trying routine of being photographed, finger printed and assigned to new quarters. To the very young children, the whole business of evacuation, relocation and segregation is incomprehensible, as registered in the faces of these two children from the Jerome Center. -- Photographer: Mace, Charles E. -- Newell, California. 9/26/43.",
