Termination of Executive Order 9066

On February 19, 1976, President Gerald R. Ford issued a proclamation titled "An American Promise" that rescinded Executive Order 9066 . Though the proclamation called the mass removal and incarceration a "setback to fundamental American principles," it stopped short of containing an apology. Coming about as the result of a combination of grassroots activism and lobbying in Washington, DC, the proclamation was an important precursor to the Redress Movement .
