It was originally published in 1982 by the University of Washington Press and reissued with a new introduction by Traise Yamamoto in 2015.\n </p>\n <p>\n Uchida writes extensively about the\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Issei/\" title=\"Issei\">\n Issei\n </a>\n , especially through observations of her own parents, and how they responded to the enormous losses and humiliation wrought by the government's decision to forcibly remove all Japanese from the West Coast and into government war camps. It is a deeply personal book, one in which she tells of her father's abrupt seizure by the FBI from their home in Berkeley, California; of her family's frantic efforts to vacate their home on ten days notice; of being forced to live in a horsestall at\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Tanforan_(detention_facility)/\" title=\"Tanforan (detention facility)\">\n Tanforan\n </a>\n detention center; and of being sent on to\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Topaz/\" title=\"Topaz\">\n Topaz\n </a>\n , a bleak camp in the Utah desert, surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards. Through intimate, detailed accounts of the losses suffered over the duration of the years in camp, Uchida illustrates the lasting impact that the U.S. government policies had on Japanese Americans' economic, cultural, physical, and psychological well-being.\n </p>\n <p>\n In the book's epilogue, Uchida explains her purpose in writing\n <i>\n Desert Exile\n </i>\n : \"I wrote [the book] for the young Japanese Americans who seek a sense of continuity with their past. But I wrote it as well for all Americans, with the hope that through knowledge of the past, they will never allow another group of people in America to be sent into a desert exile ever again\"\n \n <a class=\"\" href=\"#cite_note-ftnt_ref1-1\">\n [1]\n </a>\n \n </p>\n <div id=\"authorByline\">\n <b>\n Authored by\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Patricia_Wakida/\" title=\"Patricia Wakida\">\n Patricia Wakida\n </a>\n </b>\n </div>\n <div id=\"citationAuthor\" style=\"display:none;\">\n Wakida, Patricia\n </div>\n <div class=\"section\" id=\"Find_in_the_Digital_Library_of_Japanese_American_Incarceration\">\n <h2>\n <span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Find_in_the_Digital_Library_of_Japanese_American_Incarceration\">\n Find in the Digital Library of Japanese American Incarceration\n </span>\n </h2>\n <div class=\"section_content\">\n <p>\n <b>\n <a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"https://archive.org/details/desertexileuproo0000uchi\" rel=\"nofollow\">\n Desert Exile\n </a>\n </b>\n </p>\n <p style=\"font-size:8pt;line-height:1.5;color: #aaa;\">\n This item has been made freely available in the\n <a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"https://archive.org/details/digital-library-of-japanese-american-incarceration\" rel=\"nofollow\">\n Digital Library of Japanese American Incarceration\n </a>\n , a collaborative project with\n <a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"https://archive.org/\" rel=\"nofollow\">\n Internet Archive\n </a>\n .\n </p>\n <p>\n Might also like\n <i>\n <a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Dandelion%20Through%20the%20Crack/Kiyo's%20Story%20(book)/\" rel=\"nofollow\">\n Dandelion Through the Crack/Kiyo's Story\n </a>\n </i>\n by Kiyo Sato;\n <i>\n <a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Looking%20Like%20the%20Enemy:%20My%20Story%20of%20Imprisonment%20in%20Japanese-American%20Internment%20Camps%20(book)/\" rel=\"nofollow\">\n Looking Like the Enemy: My Story of Imprisonment in Japanese-American Internment Camps\n </a>\n </i>\n by Mary Matsuda Gruenewald;\n <i>\n <a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"https://resourceguide.densho.org/We%20the%20People:%20A%20Story%20of%20Internment%20in%20America%20(book)/\" rel=\"nofollow\">\n We the People: A Story of Internment in America\n </a>\n </i>\n by Mary Tsukamoto\n </p>\n <div id=\"RelatedArticlesDisplay\">\n <div class=\"section\" id=\"Related_Articles\">\n <h2>\n <span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Related_Articles\">\n Related Articles\n </span>\n </h2>\n <div class=\"section_content\">\n <p class=\"mw-empty-elt\">\n </p>\n <div id=\"RelatedArticlesSectionDisplay\">\n <div class=\"section\" id=\"\">\n <h3>\n <span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"\">\n </span>\n </h3>\n <div class=\"section_content\">\n <p class=\"mw-empty-elt\">\n </p>\n <ul>\n <li>\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Memoirs_of_incarceration/\" title=\"Memoirs of incarceration\">\n Memoirs of incarceration\n </a>\n </li>\n </ul>\n </div>\n </div>\n </div>\n </div>\n </div>\n </div>\n <div class=\"alert alert-success published\">\n <p>\n This page is complete and will be published to the production Encyclopedia.\n </p>\n </div>\n </div>\n </div>\n <div class=\"section\" id=\"For_More_Information\">\n <h2>\n <span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"For_More_Information\">\n For More Information\n </span>\n </h2>\n <div class=\"section_content\">\n <p>\n <i>\n <a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"http://www.washington.edu/uwpress/search/books/UCHDE2.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">\n Desert Exile\n </a>\n </i>\n at the University of Washington Press website.\n </p>\n <p>\n Chen, Fu-jen, and Su-lin Yu. \"Reclaiming the Southwest: A Traumatic Space in the Japanese American Internment Narrative.\"\n <i>\n Journal of the Southwest\n </i>\n 47.4 (Winter 2005): 551–70.\n </p>\n <p>\n Yamamoto, Traise.\n <i>\n Masking Selves, Making Subjects: Japanese American Women, Identity, and the Body\n </i>\n .
