Sab Shimono was born on July 31, 1937, in Sacramento, California, to restaurant owners Masauchi Shimono and Edith Mary Otani Shimono. He has a twin brother, Jiro Shimono. During World War II, Shimono and his family were incarcerated at the\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Sacramento_(detention_facility)/\" title=\"Sacramento (detention facility)\">\n   Sacramento Assembly Center\n  </a>\n  , then\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Tule_Lake/\" title=\"Tule Lake\">\n   Tule Lake\n  </a>\n  and\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Amache_(Granada)/\" title=\"Amache (Granada)\">\n   Amache\n  </a>\n  .\n </p>\n <p>\n  He attended Sacramento High School where he was elected student body president, and graduated from University of California, Berkeley, where he studied acting under Henrietta Harris. Subsequently, he moved to New York City to study acting for two years with Stella Adler and to be privately coached in vocal technique by Steve Ross. One of his first professional theater roles was a summer stock production of\n  <i>\n   Flower Drum Song\n  </i>\n  , while his first Broadway role was as Ito in the 1966 production of\n  <i>\n   Mame\n  </i>\n  , directed by Gene Saks and starring Angela Lansbury. He guest starred in many television shows, including\n  <i>\n   2 ½ Men\n  </i>\n  ,\n  <i>\n   Friends\n  </i>\n  ,\n  <i>\n   Seinfeld\n  </i>\n  ,\n  <i>\n   M.A.S.H.\n  </i>\n  ,\n  <i>\n   Mad Men\n  </i>\n  , and\n  <i>\n   Hawaii Five-0\n  </i>\n  . He voiced the role of Uncle for five seasons on Fox’s\n  <i>\n   Jackie Chan Adventures\n  </i>\n  , and was the voice of Chow Lo in Disney's\n  <i>\n   Mulan\n  </i>\n  .\n </p>\n <p>\n  Shimono has appeared in several plays or movies that reference the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans, including Alan Parker's\n  <i>\n   <a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Come%20See%20the%20Paradise%20(film)/\" rel=\"nofollow\">\n    Come See the Paradise\n   </a>\n  </i>\n  (1990), Michael Uno's movie version of the\n  <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Philip_Kan_Gotanda/\" title=\"Philip Kan Gotanda\">\n   Philip Kan Gotanda\n  </a>\n  play\n  <i>\n   The Wash\n  </i>\n  (1988), and independent shorts\n  <i>\n   <a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Day%20of%20Independence%20(film)/\" rel=\"nofollow\">\n    Day of Independence\n   </a>\n  </i>\n  (2003) and\n  <i>\n   <a class=\"external text offsite\" href=\"https://resourceguide.densho.org/Half%20Kenneth%20(film)/\" rel=\"nofollow\">\n    Half Kenneth\n   </a>\n  </i>\n  (2009).
