She was born and raised in Berkeley, California. After receiving a BA from University of California, Santa Cruz, she went to Japan on a Fulbright Fellowship and lived there for 14 years, working as a journalist for the\n  <i>\n   Asahi\n  </i>\n  , the Tokyo bureau of\n  <i>\n   Newsweek\n  </i>\n  and other publications. She received an MA in educational theory from Rutgers and in media anthropology from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London.
