By the 1930s, it was engaged in a sometimes heated rivalry with the\n <i>\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Rocky_Shimpo_(newspaper)/\" title=\"Rocky Shimpo (newspaper)\">\n Rocky Nippon\n </a>\n </i>\n , with the\n <i>\n Times\n </i>\n under bilingual Issei editor Fred Kaihara being more Christian oriented versus the more Buddhist orientation of the \"Nippon\n <i>\n .\n \n <a class=\"\" href=\"#cite_note-ftnt_ref1-1\">\n [1]\n </a>\n \n </i>\n </p>\n <p>\n The outbreak of war and the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans led to increases in circulation for the\n <i>\n Times\n </i>\n and other inland Japanese American newspapers. According to historian Arthur Hansen, the\n <i>\n Times\n </i>\n and its more assimilationist editorial stance enjoyed particular popularity among Nikkei who left the concentration camps to\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Resettlement/\" title=\"Resettlement\">\n resettle\n </a>\n in areas outside the West Coast. Kaihara claimed a peak circulation of 12,000 copies in January 1946, with 90% of those subscribers residing outside of Colorado, many of them in\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Resettlement_in_Chicago/\" title=\"Resettlement in Chicago\">\n Chicago\n </a>\n . The paper tried to build on that base, adding columns by\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Minoru_Yasui/\" title=\"Minoru Yasui\">\n Minoru Yasui\n </a>\n and the Chicago-based\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Togo_Tanaka/\" title=\"Togo Tanaka\">\n Togo Tanaka\n </a>\n after the war. But with the re-establishment of Japanese American papers on the West Coast as well as new papers in Chicago, the\n <i>\n Colorado Times\n </i>\n circulation inevitably declined before shutting its doors in 1962.\n \n <a class=\"\" href=\"#cite_note-ftnt_ref2-2\">\n [2]\n </a>\n \n </p>\n <div id=\"authorByline\">\n <b>\n Authored by\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Brian_Niiya/\" title=\"Brian Niiya\">\n Brian Niiya\n </a>\n , Densho\n </b>\n </div>\n <div id=\"citationAuthor\" style=\"display:none;\">\n Niiya, Brian\n </div>\n <div id=\"RelatedArticlesDisplay\">\n <div class=\"section\" id=\"Related_Articles\">\n <h2>\n <span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"Related_Articles\">\n Related Articles\n </span>\n </h2>\n <div class=\"section_content\">\n <p class=\"mw-empty-elt\">\n </p>\n <div id=\"RelatedArticlesSectionDisplay\">\n <div class=\"section\" id=\"\">\n <h3>\n <span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"\">\n </span>\n </h3>\n <div class=\"section_content\">\n <p class=\"mw-empty-elt\">\n </p>\n <ul>\n <li>\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Rocky_Shimpo_(newspaper)/\" title=\"Rocky Shimpo (newspaper)\">\n Rocky Shimpo (newspaper)\n </a>\n </li>\n <li>\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Pacific_Citizen_(newspaper)/\" title=\"Pacific Citizen (newspaper)\">\n Pacific Citizen (newspaper)\n </a>\n </li>\n <li>\n <a class=\"encyc notrg\" href=\"/Utah_Nippo_(newspaper)/\" title=\"Utah Nippo (newspaper)\">\n Utah Nippo (newspaper)\n </a>\n </li>\n </ul>\n </div>\n </div>\n </div>\n </div>\n </div>\n </div>\n <div class=\"section\" id=\"For_More_Information\">\n <h2>\n <span class=\"mw-headline\" id=\"For_More_Information\">\n For More Information\n </span>\n </h2>\n <div class=\"section_content\">\n <p>\n Hansen, Arthur A. \"Peculiar Odyssey: Newsman Jimmie Omura's Removal from and Regeneration within Nikkei Society, History, and Memory.\" In\n <i>\n Nikkei in the Pacific Northwest: Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians in the Twentieth Century\n </i>\n .
