Sociologist and initial assistant director of the War Relocation Authority 's Community Analysis Section (CAS). Frank L. Sweetser (1913–94) had just finished his Ph.D. dissertation and Columbia University in 1942 when he joined the CAS as John Fee Embree 's deputy. Sweetser held the position for just eight months, leaving in the summer of 1943 to join the navy. Edward Spicer replaced him as assistant director. After the war Sweetser took a faculty position at Boston University, where he spent his entire academic career, retiring in 1978. His chief academic interest was in the area of social ecology.
