Kaori Akiyama

Kaori Akiyama PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the International Institute of American Studies, Doshisha University (through March 2031). She received her PhD in Japanese History from The Graduate University for Advanced Studies [SOKENDAI] in 2018. She is the author of The History of Japanese Internment in Hawaiʻi: Changes in the Camps and Camp Life during the Pacific War (2020; in Japanese). Her areas of study are Japanese and Okinawans in Hawai’i, Okinawan Prisoners of War during WWII, and cultural representations in diaspora communities outside Japan.

She lives in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, a city with a diverse multiethnic population, rich international culture and beautiful mountain and ocean scenery. She also visits Honolulu at least once each year to conduct research and swim in the ocean.
