Minako Waseda received her Ph.D. in musicology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, with the dissertation titled Japanese American Musical Culture in Southern California: Its Formation and Transformation in the 20th Century . She currently teaches at Tokyo University of the Arts, and her publications include: "Looking Both Ways: GI Songs and Musical Exoticism in Post-World War II Japan," Yearbook for Traditional Music 36 (2004): 144-164, and "The Formation of Bon Dance Repertoire in Japanese Diasporas," Ongakugaku 56.2 (2010): 110-124.
